Insyde® Software Hardens Linux Systems with UEFI Security Technology
Critical Security Features Include Secure Boot and Secure Firmware Update
COMPUTEX - TAIPEI, TAIWAN JUNE 5, 2013 – Insyde Software, a leading provider of Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) BIOS, today announced the availability of new UEFI security features including Secure Boot and secure firmware update for leading Linux distributions.
With computer security becoming a critical, worldwide concern technology such as UEFI Secure Boot is quickly being adopted as a fundamental component in providing some defense against computer attacks. InsydeH2O's UEFI Secure Boot implementation allows systems to benefit from increased protection against malware such as root kits, malicious attacks at firmware, and other system intrusions.
Close collaboration with Linux vendors such as Canonical have allowed Insyde to engineer robust solutions to meet the security and stability needs for server platforms running Linux. Together, the companies have successfully validated UEFI Secure Boot with InsydeH2O and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and later releases.
In addition, Insyde provides tools to OEMs to perform Secure Boot configuration changes and signed secure firmware updates for systems running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. Key concepts of these solutions were discussed at the most recent Intel Developer Forum held in Beijing, where Insyde and Canonical co-presented a technical session entitled UEFI Firmware Enhances Linux Security and Adds New Benefits.
"Our collaboration with Insyde Software will benefit OEMs with strengthened platform security for systems running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS," said Yang Kun, Engineering Manager, Hardware Enablement Team at Canonical. "Insyde's UEFI firmware technology addressing Secure Boot and secure firmware updates are critical components to the overall security of Ubuntu based systems," added Kun.
"We worked closely with Canonical to create secure interfaces for OS boot protection," said Trevor Western, VP of Embedded & Server Engineering at Insyde Software. "Our solutions addressing secure boot and secure firmware updates for Linux give our OEM customers added protection against system vulnerabilities," added Western.
