InsydeH2O® UEFI BIOS Adds Additional Boot Protection with FIDO Authentication Support

Firmware-level System Protection with Fast Identity Online (FIDO) Authentication Support and Yubikey™ U2F Security Key

Announcement Caps Off a Week-long Series of Innovations Showcased During Insyde Software’s Innovate25 Event

TAIPEI, TAIWAN – September 23, 2022 – Insyde® Software, a leading provider of UEFI BIOS and systems management software, today announced that its flagship UEFI firmware solution, InsydeH2O®, now supports FIDO authentication with the Yubikey™ U2F USB security key as a secure, password-less alternative to traditional password-based BIOS Setup log-in.

FIDO U2F is an open authentication standard created by Google and Yubico that enables users to securely access services and devices with a single security key instead of a password. Authentication happens instantly, without the need for drivers or client software. InsydeH2O’s support of this security technology integrates the public-private key structure of the FIDO U2F standard, where identity verification is performed by the Yubikey, and the PC device it is attached to only permits the authorized device owner to access the system or BIOS Setup. PC makers can also extend the scope of protection with this password-less integration to meet their design and security requirements, including features such as power-on password, HDD password and more.

“The need for increased security and hardened system access is clear and now is the time to bring this unique authentication method to InsydeH2O,” said Lawrence Chiu, Vice President of Engineering at Insyde Software. “InsydeH2O’s integration of FIDO authentication will bring many benefits for PC manufacturers, end-users and organizations, including alleviating some of the support and security problems inherent with using a traditional BIOS password to lock a system,” added Chiu.
