Insyde® Software Leverages Wind River® Simulation Technology to Speed Server BIOS Development

InsydeH2O® UEFI BIOS Ready to Boot Before Hardware was Available
Resulting in Cost Savings and Reduced Time to Market for OEMs

INTEL DEVELOPER FORUM – SAN FRANCISCO, CA SEPTEMBER 10, 2013 – Insyde Software, a leading provider of UEFI BIOS, today announced that it has successfully used Wind River Simics full system simulator to accelerate Insyde's BIOS development time, resulting in a more complete BIOS being available very early in the development cycle for its OEM and ODM server customers.

Simics enables the simulation of full systems of all sizes, from large racks of multiple boards, to single computer systems including CPU, memory, devices, buses, etc., allowing Insyde to start development, test and debug for InsydeH2O UEFI BIOS well before the silicon and hardware for that platform are available. Initially, Insyde engineers used the Simics virtual platform of the Intel "Haswell" based server platform, knowing that future Intel servers and SoCs will continue to be supported by Simics.

Through the use of Simics, Insyde engineers had a well developed and tested BIOS ready for initial hardware bring-up, which was then completed in less than 4 hours. Use of Simics dramatically reduced the cost of initial system testing by providing a dedicated virtual platform for each team member.

"Simics gave us a 3 month head start," said Trevor Western, vice president of server engineering at Insyde Software. "This results in real benefits to our server BIOS customers including improved code quality, faster problem resolution, more efficient integration of advanced technology and a reduction in overall time to market."

"The BIOS development results from Insyde demonstrate that the overall lifecycle of complex systems such as advanced IA server and storage designs can realize significant efficiencies and accelerated development," said Michel Genard, vice president of tools and lifecycle solutions at Wind River. "Through the use of Wind River Simics, teams can change their approach to development and take advantage of capabilities that were previously impossible. We look forward to continue working with Insyde on future Intel server and system-on-chip based systems."
