Insyde® Software Powers Supercomputer Simulating COVID-19 Pathogen Spread
Finnish “Puhti” Supercomputer Features Atos® BullSequana™ X1000 with Nearly 700 CPU nodes enabled by InsydeH2O® UEFI BIOS

TAIPEI, TAIWAN – April 28, 2020 – Insyde® Software, a leading provider of UEFI BIOS and systems management software, today announced that its flagship UEFI firmware product, InsydeH2O® UEFI BIOS, is being used in the Atos® BullSequana™ X1000-based Puhti Supercomputer at Finland’s CSC – IT Center for Science, launched in September 2019. The supercomputer is being used to conduct important SARS-CoV-2 simulations on pathogen spread in public places.
The Puhti supercomputer, part of the Atos BullSequana X1000 line of exascale-class supercomputers with Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors, has 682 CPU nodes providing a theoretical peak performance of up to 1.8 petaflops. Leveraging InsydeH2O’s reliability, stability, and advanced firmware feature-set, the BullSequana X1000 provides the performance, density, scalability, and energy efficiency that demanding 21st century challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic require.
A group of Finnish researchers at CSC utilized the power of the Puhti supercomputer to simulate models explaining how pathogens like the one that causes COVID-19 can spread in public places such as grocery stores. The simulation was designed to help address uncertainties concerning the relative risks of various activities by analyzing how aerosol particles emitted by people can move, spread and linger in the air.
